Cops: Suspected Downed Plane Was Just Balloons

Authorities initially thought a pilot or hang glider may have been in distress.

A frantic rush to rescue a possible pilot or hang glider that was thought to have gone down by the 67 Steps in Greenport on Tuesday turned out to be a false alarm, authorities said.

According to Southold Town police, officers responded to the scene on Tuesday at 4:48 p.m. after reports that a possible plane or hang glider may have plummeted into the Long Island Sound.

Southold marine units, as well as the Greenport Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Aviation, all responded to the scene.

After an investigation it was concluded that the people who reported the incident had actually only seen a large cluster of balloons land in the water.
