Cops: Man Threatened Physical Harm, Slapped With Criminal Contempt Charge

Police said the defendant violated an order of protection.

A Greenport man was charged with criminal contempt after police said he got into a verbal dispute with someone and threatened physical harm.

According to Southold Town police, Robert Lee Smith, 53, of Greenport got into a verbal argument with Harry Gamble, 60, of Greenport on Thursday at 7:39 p.m. on Third Street in the village.

Police said that during the argument, Smith told Gamble he intended to cause him physical harm, violating an order of protection Gamble had against him by making the threats.

Smith was arrested and charged with criminal contempt in the first degree, a felony. He was transported to Southold Town Police Department and held for arraignment.
