Love Lane Market Is Open For Business

Mike and Patti Avella bring specialty foods to the North Fork.

After months of keeping the public waiting, the Love Lane Market is open for business in Mattituck and will be celebrating with a grand opening party full of in-store events including pizza demonstrations, ice cream tastings and more on Oct. 8 and 9.

Owned by owners Mike and Patti Avella, the new market is a specialty food shop, featuring fresh local produce, an in-house butcher, fresh pasta, Asian specialties such as fresh-made sushi, a pizza oven, and rotisserie.

“We want the store to be along the lines of a Dean & DeLuca store. Our main draw is our meat department,” explained Patti Avella. The meat department boasts a wide variety of cuts of meat and fresh sausages, many of which come from local farmers. The beef in the store comes from, which raises grass-fed local beef.

Aside from McCall’s Vineyard beef, the market sells local produce, vineyard products and other specialty items brought in from local producers. Eventually, the Avellas hope to add seafood and baked goods into their store. “There’s nothing else like it on the North Fork. I wanted to make a point of having a good selection of unusual products that are harder to find,” said Mike Avella.

When the owner of the old market on Love Lane decided to retire, the Avellas took hold of an opportunity to bring very high quality products to the North Fork. “At the restaurant [Love Lane Kitchen], there were many items and ingredients I couldn’t find anywhere. The opportunity to purchase the market arose and we said ‘Let’s make sure we have the kind of items foodies are looking for,” said Mike Avella.

Originally scheduled to open in May, the market was a labor of love for the Avellas and required a great deal of construction to ensure it was sound. The refinished market is clean and crisp inside, finished with reclaimed wood and unique Moroccan tiles.

“We used a lot of reclaimed products and as much high-efficiency products as we could,” said Patti Avella. The new shopping carts inside the store are made from recycled water bottles, making them smaller, lighter and a perfect fit to cruise around the store.

Aside from the grand opening event at the Love Lane Market, the market also has other special events. For instance, last weekend they roasted a suckling pig. They can order any particular specialty food product you may be interested in.
