John Chamberlain's Sculpture Greets Guild Hall Patrons

The late sculptor, who lived on Shelter Island, made "Mermaids Mischief" in 2009.

A large sculpture by the late John Chamberlain, who lived the later part of his life on Shelter Island, was installed in front of Guild Hall in East Hampton Village, just before Memorial Day weekend.

"Mermaids Mischief," a 2009 piece, is on loan from the the Gagosian Gallery in New York City.

The sculpture is one of a series of four “foils” and is constructed from green- colored industrial aluminum, which was looped and flexed into a whimsical, biomorphic form, Guild Hall explained. Chamberlain made smaller sculptures from household aluminum foil as far back as the 1970s.

“We are honored to show one of the later John Chamberlain sculptures,” Ruth Appelhof, the executive director of Guild Hall, said in a statement. “This work will be a playful, irreverent, and exuberant presence on Main Street in East Hampton," she said.

"Given its reflective and textured surface and powerful torque, the sculpture appears to be in constant flux; changes in atmosphere and weather also impact its overall appearance," the museum said in a statement.

Chamberlain died in 2011 at the age of 84.
