Orient Beach State Park Cancels Holiday Tree Lighting

State Parks and Recreation announces cancellation of yearly event.

The New York Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation announced on Monday that Orient Beach State Park's annual holiday tree lighting and visit from Santa scheduled for Dec. 2 has been cancelled due to several unforeseen circumstances. Deputy Regional Director of Long Island's state parks George Gorman said that the tree that has been used and was going to be used again had been uprooted during Tropical Storm Irene and that too many issues with park staff and local volunteers came up at the same time. "Some staffers had some medical issues and volunteers just aren't as available this year," he said. "So with all this we decided to cancel this year again next year." The event has drawn hundreds to Orient Beach State Park for …

Orient Beach State Park Reopens

After tidal flooding from Irene, Orient’s State Park bounces back to open for Labor Day Weekend.

Everything is back to normal at Orient Beach State Park after Tropical Storm Irene caused massive flooding and road damage. After three solid days of clean-up, park officials opened the park to the public at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning. Park Director Sue Wuehler said that the tides floods were very high and the main beach, picnic and park areas were completely under water. “Once the picnic tables are underwater, you really don’t know when you can open,” she said. “But we’ve had a couple of nice days after the storm, and it really was all tide — and it receded.” The entrance road, which was also damaged by undermining waves, is now passable, Wuehler said. “The asphalt did collapse but the DOT came out and patched it all up,” she said. …

Orient Beach State Park is Underwater; All State and County Parks Closed

Park officials announce the closure of all state and county parks on Long Island.

All state and county parks, beaches and golf course are closed until clean up is completed and power is restored after Hurricane Irene, officials announced on Monday. Workers are busy clearing trees and debris and addressing flooding issues at spots like Inlet Pond County Park in Greenport and Orient Beach State Park — much of which is still underwater, said Deputy Regional Director of Long Island's state parks George Gorman. "It's not looking good out there," he said. "The parking and picnic areas are all underwater, they're still without power and the entrance road was undermined by the hurricane." Parks will remained closed until it is determined that it is safe to go there — Gorman said he had no idea how long Orient State Park would …
