Temperatures are predicted to hit 60 degrees in the sunshine today — will you hit the beach or nature trail for a walk today?

The North Fork is home to several trails, beaches and scenic spots for road runs or walks. Since you haven't had the opportunity to do much skiing or sledding with the kids this winter, will you be taking advantage of the warm weather today at places such as Laurel Lake Preserve, Inlet Pond Country Park or Orient Point County Park? Residents Express Concerns Over Wind Turbine at Laurel Lake Preserve

Report on "The Suffolk Times" states local residents are concerned with a Suffolk County Water Authority proposal to build a wind turbine on the property.

According to a report in The Suffolk Times, some residents surrounding the Laurel Lake Preserve are up in arms at the prospect of a wind turbine being installed on the property, at the direction of the Suffolk County Water Authority. The report states that at a public hearing last week at the Mattituck-Laurel Library, the president of a local homeowner's association cited fire, and potential destruction of the preserve, as "a very real, terrifying thought." According to the report, the Southold Town Board has yet to take a stance on the issue, and the turbine was not discussed at Monday's Planning Board Meeting. I am no expert, but the idea deserves some consideration as it's being emplyed in otherbparts of the globe. The wind turbines also filet the birds that migrate so it's a fish vs bird issue   more ›

Water Authority Wind Turbine Proposed for Laurel Lake Preserve

Southold Town considers changing wind energy code to accomodate public facilities.

The Suffolk County Water Authority is interested in installing a wind turbine on Laurel Lake Preserve, according to Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell. At a work session Tuesday morning, Supervisor Russell mentioned that a Suffolk County Water Authority representative proposed the installation of a windmill the same size as the one recently installed at Pindar Vineyards in Peconic — the largest so far in Southold Town. The wind turbine would help power water pumps located in the preserve area and would offset energy costs for the company. Russell asked the board members if they were interested in tweaking the town’s wind energy code, which currently allows for the installation of turbines only on active farmland. He said he was also …

The question is poorly put. It's not complicated — Suffolk County Water Authority pumps are not public facilities. Land use regulation applies only to land, not to owners. It is illegal to regulate for any owner. The so called Suffolk County Water Authority is not part of county government and has no authority over what is specifically granted by NYS   more ›

Oct. 4: Five Local Parks to Visit During Fall

As the weather cools and the leaves start to turn, the North Fork has several parks for a fall stroll.

Question of the Day: Do You Prefer to Play in the Bay or the Sound?

What body of water will you be spending most of your time in this summer?

We're lucky here on the North Fork to live in such a diverse coastal community, surrounded by the waters of the Long Island Sound and the Peconic Bay, available for all sorts of more aggressive water sports like water skiing, jet skiing and wind surfing. Then there are smaller spots like Laurel Lake and Hashamomuck Pond, perfect for canoeing or kayaking. Do you have a favorite spot to hang in the water on the North Fork? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment boxes below.

Great Peconic Bay is the place for me. I grew up on the bay from birth and now 65 years later must unfortunately sell the family homestead. Beside the access for sailing, skiing, shelling etc. my husband will miss the clamming he does just 20 feet off shore. All of our East End bodies of water are beautiful at sunrise and/or sunset, but to me the sun rising over Robin's Island is the utimate in …   more ›
