Where Will You Walk or Run on This Warm Winter Day?

Temperatures are predicted to hit 60 degrees in the sunshine today — will you hit the beach or nature trail for a walk today?

The North Fork is home to several trails, beaches and scenic spots for road runs or walks. Since you haven't had the opportunity to do much skiing or sledding with the kids this winter, will you be taking advantage of the warm weather today at places such as Laurel Lake Preserve, Inlet Pond Country Park or Orient Point County Park? 5 Things You Need to Know Today

Oct. 4: Five Local Parks to Visit During Fall

As the weather cools and the leaves start to turn, the North Fork has several parks for a fall stroll.

Whether on the water or encompassed in woods, North Fork Parks are still great to visit during the fall. Here are five — feel free to let us know what your favorite is in the boxes below. Orient Beach State Park: Check out this park as its pristine maritime forest changes with the weather. Stroll along the expansive beach, now peaceful without too many tourists, in the cool breeze off of Gardiners Bay. Dam Pond Preserve: Fall is a great time to hike the trails around Dam Pond Preserve, a county-owned park in East Marion. The trails are tucked away just off the Orient-East Marion causeway. Inlet Pond County Park: Like the birds of fall? Then this 55-acre nature preserve in Greenport is for you. Take a walk around its 1.6 miles of groomed …

With Grant Expiring, Town Pushing to Complete Bay to Sound Trails Project

Project with Greenport Village would link preserved parcels from Pipes Cove to Inlet Pond County Park.

Southold Town officials authorized Supervisor Scott Russell on Tuesday to enter into an agreement with the Village of Greenport and accept grant funding to move forward and complete a trail project in Greenport West connecting the Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound. A $65,000 grant — originally won during the tenure of Tom Wickham as supervisor — expires at the end of January, leaving the town to spend dollars on materials and services for the project in the …

100 Things to Do on the North Fork

#73: Explore Nature's Bounty at North Fork Audubon

The North Fork Audubon Society hosts a variety of on-site programs throughout the year and has an extensive trail system on the county-owned property.

One of the North Fork’s lesser known gems is the North Fork Audubon Society, located on Route 48 in Greenport. The North Fork Audubon Society is the local chapter of the Audubon Society and the group currently serves as stewards for Inlet Pond County Park. Through its programs and trails, the naturalist group helps educate visitors on local wildlife and conservation efforts. Diana Van Buren is the North Fork Audubon Society’s president and program director said she is proud of the newly installed art gallery. Van Buren said she and artist Koichiro Kurita transformed two of the rooms in the Red Barn into an art gallery by adding lighting and painting the walls. As part of Kurita’s Beyond Spheres project, Kurita’s photography, which involves…
