Greenport became its own incorporated village in 1838, during its heyday as a major whaling port. Since then, it hasMore transformed from a small fishing community into a unique and welcoming tourist destination on the North Fork. This building is where the mayor of Greenport and other administrators work.

The mayor and five-member village board meet the third Thursday of the month and hold work sessions the second Thursday of the month at a meeting hall in the Greenport Fire department building across the street.

Organized in 1845, the Greenport Fire Department has 125 volunteer members who respond to about 700 calls a year. TheMore department has four engines, one ladder truck, two ambulances and two water rescue units. It also consists of a ladies auxiliary unit and junior fire department. John Grilli is the chief, Ken White is the assistant chief and Wayde Manwaring is the second assistant chief.
