Shelter Island Fire Department

Historically, Shelter Island had two active fire departments — one in Shelter Island Heights, founded in 1895,More and another one located in the center of town, founded in 1932. The two brigades merged in 1997 and, today, 80 volunteers respond to about 300 calls a year.</p> <p>The department has ladders trucks, pumper trucks and rescue trucks and boats but does not have ambulance services. Emergency medical response on the island is provided by the last American Red Cross ambulance service in the country.</p>

Hampshire Farms Riding Center

Since 2007, equestrians Erica Steindl and Laura Tuthill have run Hampshire Farms Riding Center, a scenic ranch tuckedMore away from the touristy hustle of the commercial clusters of Shelter Island. The farm is active year-round with groups of kids, the majority of whom are in their early teens, learning to ride hunter-jumper-style on a cross-country track and on indoor and outdoor arenas. The riding center owns 20 horses of various breeds, all available for lessons, and also boards at least 20 privately-owned horses throughout the year.
