I don't consider myself a huge jazz person, but Teddy was something else. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to capture him on video (as rough as it was) a few years ago. He was an underrated musical genius and one fiesty character until the end.   more ›

The many moving comments from people on line and in the newspapers speak about the person John Romanelli, the family man John Romanelli, the businessman John Romanelli and every word you hear depict the kind of person he was. Sadly, it appears as though there not that many people such as John amongst us. Perhaps, if we all try to take a chapter from his amazing book and attempt to duplicate the …   more ›

Hundreds Say Goodbye to Romanelli

The line for visiting hours for John Romanelli at Coster Heppner Funeral Home stretched into a residential neighborhood.

By 8:10 p.m. on Thursday, over an hour into the first session of visiting hours for John Romanelli, there was still very little parking to be found at Coster Heppner Funeral home in Cutchogue. And the long, slow-moving line of people was mostly silent as they stood in the dark outside, waiting to say goodbye. Romanelli, 47, was badly burnt in a fuel fire at 7:16 a.m. on Dec. 30 at the grounds of Burt's Reliable fuel oil company in Southold. He died from those wounds early Tuesday morning, leaving behind his wife, Heather, two grown children, Ethan and Tara — and a shocked community. Many had grown to love and admire the man they had gotten to know through his diligent and friendly service work as president of Burt's Reliable. There was …

Community Pays Tribute To Romanelli

Burt's Reliable president John Romanelli, who died this week following a tragic accident, touched the lives of hundreds of Southold residents since moving to the North Fork 20 years ago.

John Romanelli’s caring philosophy in his business and in life can still be seen on Burt’s Reliable’s website: “We’ll take care of it.” “If there is a problem, you can always speak with me,” he wrote on the site. “Though we are top-tier professionals, we are also your friends and neighbors. We recognize that every situation is different, and we are always willing to work with our customers.” Before he died Tuesday at the age of 47 from burn wounds suffered last week, Romanelli lived that philosophy in business and in life, according to many who knew him as a professional, a town board member, a neighbor and a friend. Here are just a few remembrances of Romanelli, the backbone of Burt’s Reliable fuel company in Southold for over 20 years. …

Question: What Do You Do To Help the Homeless?

Maureen's Haven and John's Place are in full swing this time of year — do you volunteer to help the area's homeless?

Maureen's Haven and John's Place are two charitable organizations set up at local churches on a rotating schedule during the week to house, feed and counsel the area's homeless this time of year. Some take advantage of the programs, others choose to stay outdoors.  How do you view the problem of homelessness on the North Fork? Do you think it's getting better or worse as the years go by and the economy weakens? Do you volunteer regularly or only occasionally at the shelters? Let us know your thoughts in the boxes below.

Small Holdings Farm is located on the Main Road in Aquebogue and we are still accepting donations. We just had our sale this past weekend and the people that came were all very generous, often bringing …   more ›
