The Perlman Music Program

Founded by renowned violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman and his wife Toby Perlman, the Perlman Music Program began in 1993 as a two-week summer session for young, gifted string players. Sessions were held at a rented camp site at Boys' Harbor in East Hampton. In 2000, the school relocated to a 28-acre former rustic resort on Shelter Island. It is now populated each summer by a world-class staff and music students of rare and special talent, ages 12 to 30. The students play the violin, viola, cello, bass and piano, and come from all over the world to attend this intensive training program. The Perlmans strive to provide a supportive and nurturing learning environment, one that can adapt to the needs of each individual student.

The hilltop campus, overlooking Gardiners Bay, has large buildings for dorms and a dining hall, tiny cabins used for practice rooms and bungalows for faculty housing. A large tent for performances is located in the middle of the campus. Programs include a six-week Summer Music School, a two-and-a-half week Chamber Music Workshop and the New York City Yearlong Mentorship program.
