Eastern Long Island Hospital, located on the picturesque banks of Stirling Harbor in Greenport, has 90 beds and serves the communities of North Fork and Shelter Island. The hospital specializes in general surgery, pain management, psychiatry, radiology, women's health, men's health, geriatrics, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Established in 1905, ELIH was Suffolk County's first voluntary hospital — run out of a Victorian mansion. The mansion is long gone but the community-oriented hospital, the smallest in the county, has evolved into one of the finest in New York State, according to several recent studies.

A 2009 survey from the Hospital Value Index, which was reported in the New York Times, named ELIH one of the country's top 100 "best value" hospitals based on overall scores for quality, efficiency and patient satisfaction. The hospital was ranked 19th out of 231 in the state and fourth out of 23 hospitals on Long Island. ELIH also received a five star rating for outstanding patient experience in 2010 by HealthGrades, the nation's leading healthcare rating organization.

Medical, surgical, acute care services, and outpatient and ambulatory surgery care are the hospital's core services. ELIH is also a destination hospital for pain management and behavioral health, with the only acute psychiatric unit on Long Island's East End. Quannacut, the addiction services division, provides treatment for those with chemical dependency. The geriatric clinic is also important in a community with a high percentage of residents and visitors over the age of 65.

With a remodeled interior, constant updates in technology and a staff focused on highly personal care, CEO Paul Connor describes his hospital as "high tech and high touch." Already equipped with a helicopter pad, the emergency department was rebuilt in 2005 with an emergency dock, which helps those bound by water in this maritime community to receive care. A gift shop is stocked with jewelry, books, cards, plants and candy, and a restaurant provides visitors and employees with breakfast and lunch.

The hospital is backed by members of a board of trustees, all local residents with years of experience in the medical arts. Memberships include the Health Care Association of New York State, Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council, the Greater New York Blood Bank and United Way Participating Agency. The hospital is approved by New York State Office of Mental Health, Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, Department of Health and the Social Security Administration.
