Waiter Race Will Help Hospital, Mark Market’s 25th Anniversary

Greenport streets will be closed from 10 to 11 a.m. on Sunday as fundraiser takes place.

Balancing a stemmed glass while walking as fast as possible will be the challenge for several local waiters on Sunday at 10 a.m. as they participate in a fundraiser for called the Great Waiter Race — a take on the original Paris waiter race of 1905, the same year Eastern Long Island Hospital was founded.

The contents of the glass will be provided by BodyArmor natural drink beverages. And the event is also part of an ongoing celebration of The Market — a health food store in Greenport that turns 25 this year.

Shelly Scoggins has been the owner of The Market since 1987. The race will start at the hospital's on Main Street and end in front of There is still time to sign up — the deadline is Saturday at 5 p.m. and the fee is $50. Call the Market at 631-477-8803.
