"Plant and Sing" event included live music headliners Martha and Rufus Wainwright at Sylvestor Manor this past weekend.

After Friday evening's contra dancing and garlic shucking at the Shelter Island Historical Society's Haven's barn, the celebration moved to Sylvester Manor for two full days of live music, demos, poetry, crafts and games, yoga, sweet potato harvesting, garlic planting, local food vending and literary events including poetry, comedy, storytelling and readings.

Headlining the music stage was Grammy nominee Rufus Wainwright, who has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation. Rufus was joined on stage by his father, folk singer Loudon Wainwright III and his sister Martha Wainwright all of who have summered on Shelter Island for decades.

Other musical treats included youthful singer/songwriter Anais Mitchell, who performed her passionately written songs about world politics with an acoustic guitar and a distinct innocent voice.
