The Flower Buds are Emerging on Long Island Grapevines

A chardonnay grapevine's tiny flower buds shows itself on Sunday in Aquebogue.

These pictures were taken on Mother's Day Sunday at the miniature vineyard in the backyard at the  in Aquebogue.

The chardonnay shoots (Dijon clone 76) are well past budbreak (which was about a week prior). They're growing rapidly and are now about 6 inches long. The tender, light-green leaves are unfurling and stretching up toward the sunlight. Tiny flower buds are visible. They look like miniature grape clusters . . . . they also remind me of wisteria flower buds.

Some shoots have one flower bud, some two.

Each flower bud will get bigger, start to resemble a grape cluster, produce yellow flowers in June and then each flower cluster will produce one bunch of grapes.
