Southold's Kubiak Drafted by Tampa Bay Rays

Right-handed pitcher selected in 36th round out of University of Albany.

SECAUCUS, N.J. – Southold native David Kubiak was selected in the 36th round, 1,110 overall, by the Tampa Bay Rays of this year’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft Wednesday.

The 6-foot-7 Kubiak was drafted out of the University of Albany, where he was the school’s top pitcher this season. He had a 4.72 ERA and led the team with six wins and 73 strikeouts, which ties him for fourth all-time in school history for single-season numbers.

Kubiak, who did not attend the draft held at MLB Network Studios, was not immediately available for comment.

He finished his college career as the school’s leader in strikeouts (227) and innings pitched (278).

“We are very excited for Dave and his family as he takes on his next challenge," said Albany coach Jon Mueller in a statement. "We wish him the best of luck in the future."

He becomes the sixth player drafted in Albany’s Division I era since 2001.

At Southold High School he was a two-time team MVP and was 9-0 with a 0.08 ERA his senior season, recording 94 strikeouts en route to all-county and second team all-state selections.
