Porters to Face Off Against Red Devils

The Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island Porters will take on the Center Moriches Red Devils Friday night.

After an impressive 55-8 win against McGann-Mercy last week, the Porters high school football team will see if their success so far this season will continue when facing a tougher opponent, the Center Moriches Devils.

In-game battles: This game is going to be an extremely tough call, although the odds seem to be slightly in favor of the Red Devils.  The Porters and the Red Devils both beat Wyandanch and McGann-Mercy by a landslide while both losing to the Mt. Sinai Mustangs and the Babylon Panthers.  When comparing Greenport's scores with Center Moriches' scores against the same teams, it's hard to draw any major conclusions.  The Red Devils seem to consistently win by more points, and the games they lost were closer, so they might be the expected victors in this match-up.

Interesting fact: Despite the school's long history, Center Moriches Varsity Football began in 2007 with a Red Devils loss 30-0 against Mercy, so it will be exciting to see how the Red Devils' new team is able to compete with the Porters' older football program. Porters head coach Jack Martilotta even played for the Porters as a defensive end for the team back in the 1990's.

Last week:  The Red Devils might have a slight edge up on the Porters but not enough to make any solid predictions. The Center Moriches vs. Wyandanch game resulted in an impressive 47-0 win for the Red Devils. The Porters also won their game against Mercy 55-8.

Who to look out for: At the game, keep an eye on the Porters' quarterback, Mike Mangiamele, running back Ryan Malone, and defensive end Alex Passanant, all of whom played impressive games last Friday.  You'll also want to look out for the Red Devils' Myles Bell, Mike Covello, and Wayne Harris.

What's next: Next up, the Porters will be going head-to-head with the Southampton team on October 15.  The next home game will take place on October 2 against Bayport-Bluepoint.
