Highlights of girls and boys high school soccer games from the week of Sept. 12

Last week was an exciting and promising one for North Fork high school soccer teams.

Southold Boys' Varsity Soccer team kicked off the week with a non-scoring, non-league home game against Bayport-Blue Point on Sept. 13. Southold goalie Preston Jolliver made six saves during the 0-0 game.

The Mattituck Girls' Varsity Soccer team beat Southold 4-0 in a much-anticipated non-league game between the rival teams on Sept. 15 at Mattituck High School. Senior Morgan Zuhoski scored two goals, and seniors Fiona Gorman and Amber Mello each scored one goal. Mello also had two assists and Southold goalie Melissa Rogers saved 12 goals.

The Mattituck Boys' Varisity Soccer team beat Greenport 3-0 after a dry spell during the first half of the game held Sept. 16 in Mattituck. Alex Scalia scored two goals and Andres Aldaz scored one goal to bring Mattituck to victory. Brandon Lake, Shawn Smiley and David Burkhardt all had assists. Mattituck goalie Austin Scoggin saved three goals, while Greenport goalie Sean Charters saved nine.

After a respectable fight on their home turf, the Southold Girls' Varisity Soccer team lost 5-2 to Babylon on Sept. 17. Chelsea Anderson and Justina Babcock both scored goals for Southold, and Southold goalie Melissa Rogers was in fine form with 19 saves.

Southold Varsity Girls' Soccer Coach Kevin McGoey said he was impressed with his players despite the losses. He commended team captains Emma Richter, Megan Knapp, and Emily Metz for their leadership skills this early in the season.

"We are a young team, and every chance we have to take the field against strong opponents like Babylon will help us improve," he said. "All of our players are promising. With each varsity game they play, they are becoming better."
