Public Engagement Sails on Long Island Sound

Afternoon Educational Sails – Great for Families!

Enjoy the excitement and wonder of Long Island Sound aboard the 80' Schooner SoundWaters. Work together to raise the sails, examine firsthand the rich diversity of life that exists beneath the waves at an onboard touch tank; sample and test water quality; learn about hypoxia; analyze groundwater; examine floatable debris; and discuss actions people can take to reduce impact that humans have on the health of the Sound.

All children must be at least 6 years old.

Said one father who sailed on the Schooner: "In addition to helping the crew hoist the sails, kids can learn about the environment and aquatic life of Long Island Sound from well trained, kid-friendly instructors."

The sails from Greenport are part of an initiative by SoundWaters to increase appreciation and stewardship of Long Island Sound in local communities in New York and Connecticut. They are supported in part by the Long Island Sound Study.
