Don't Miss: Mattituck Yacht Club Sunfish Derby

The family-friendly event is a time-honored tradition for many.

A time-honored event is set to take place in Mattituck on Friday.

The Mattituck Yacht Club, a family sailing club located on Peconic Bay Boulevard, will host the annual Sunfish Derby on Friday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., a tradition that's over 60 years strong.

Sailors from across the East End will come together at the derby to race sailboats on the Great Peconic Bay.

Residents will be able to watch the bright and festive Sunfish from the Yacht Club beach, next to the ball fields in Mattituck, as well as from most bay beaches in Mattituck.

Both Sunfish and Laser sailboat fleets will be racing in the Sunfish Derby sailing regatta.

The “junior” class, which includes children ages 8 to 12, will race in the morning, and the “youth," 13-18 years, and “seniors," ages 19 and up, will race in the afternoon.

Awards will be given to the top five finishers in each class.

The Mattituck Yacht Club first opened in 1910 and has been operated continuously for 103 years, with a mission to promote an interest in sailing, seamanship and sportsmanship through educational and social programs for members.
