Shelter Island and 9/11

On Shelter Island, the first weekend after Labor Day was highlighted by wonderfully crisp weather and romance in the air with weddings taking place amongst us.  Another kind of romance was also prevalent, the love of homes.

The real estate activity continued at a brisk pace, with multiple offers on properties which had been listed for over a year.  In recent years, many buyers have not been accustomed to having to show more than just a higher purchase price—when there are multiple offers, financing and as few contingencies as possible are determining factors.

As tenants moved out of their summer rentals, the “early birds” toured Summer 2014 rentals during the week after Labor Day.

This time of year inevitably brings back memories of the events of 9/11. There are many people on Shelter Island who were directly affected by 9/11, each with a personal experience, some too painful to contemplate.

At that time, I worked a block and a half from the World Trade Center as a commercial real estate broker, and had leased offices to tenants in the towers. Fortunately no harm had come to those people.  As soon as the bridges were opened, I packed some bags and drove to my home on Shelter Island. My first stop was the Shelter Island Heights Pharmacy where Greg greeted me, saying that they had been concerned for my welfare and that he was so happy to see me. It was then I had a feeling of belonging, a sense of neighborliness and of peace and safety--Shelter Island was my home.
