VIDEO: Porters Get Ready For Football Season

Varsity and junior varsity players on the North Fork's consolidated football team wrap up their last practice of the summer with confidence in a new season.

Porters’ football coach Jack Martilotta said he was very happy with his team this past Friday as he ran plays and worked out the kinks during his last practice before a Saturday scrimmage.

With 55 players coming from Mattituck, Southold, Greenport, and Shelter Island on varsity and junior varsity this year, Martilotta is working with one of the biggest teams he’s seen on the Greenport field in quite sometime.

“We have a good mix of seniors and juniors on varsity and we’re bringing up some JV players to fill positions,” he said. “ But I can’t lose an all-county quarter back and not be a different team."

Ryan Malone, last year’s all-county running back, will be quarterback this year, replacing Mike Mangialele, who graduated last year. Tom Filipkowski is the tailback and backup quarterback this year. Senior Billy Bishop volunteered to be the team’s kicker this year — the first time he’s played the position.

“But I played soccer for eight years, so I have a lot of experience,” he said.
