Test Scores Vary Across North Fork High Schools

Latest New York State School Report Card shows students passing Regents exams at different rates across the region.

High School students across the North Fork are passing state exams at much different rates, the latest New York State School Report Card shows.

For example, 94 percent of students in the taking the English Regents exam passed in the 2009-2010 school year. That's compared to 88 percent of test takers passing the test in the and 86 percent passing in the .

As early as the 2007-2008 school year, Greenport saw a 95 percent pass rate for the same test.

For the Integrated Algebra regents, 99 percent of Mattituck test takers passed while 93 percent passed in Greenport. Southold, however, saw 88 percent pass, down from 98 percent just one year earlier.

On the science front, however, scores were much closer, with Greenport having the highest pass rate at 83 percent, followed by Mattituck at 78 percent and Southold at 77 percent.

The report, which was released on Thursday, includes academic results, as well as a three-year look at how enrollment has changed, for all the districts in the state.

That includes information on graduation rates, as well as post-graduation plans.

In the Mattituck school district, 124 seniors graduated in 2009-2010, and only 2 students dropped out. Of those, 94 percent earned a Regent's diploma. Also, 66 percent planned to attend a 4-year college, while 22 percent said they would enter a 2-year college. Eight students entered the job market while two joined the military.

Southold graduated 97 seniors, with 3 dropping out and 93 percent earning a Regents diploma. Sixty percent were headed to a 4-year school, while 26 percent had plans to attend a 2-year community college. Six students hit the work force, and four joined the military.

In Greenport, 39 students graduated while 5 dropped out. Of graduating seniors, 74 percent earned a Regents diploma. After high school, 40 percent planned to attend a 4-year college, 31 percent a 2-year college and 24 percent decided to seek employment.
