School Kids Learn About Farming, Healthy Eating

The program is meant to teach children about life on a North Fork farm, and about nutrition.

It's never too early to teach kids the importance of proper nutrition.

Recently, the Peconic Land Trust welcomed students from Southold Elementary School as part of a bi-annual program to teach them about life on a farm, making the right nutritional choices, and the work that goes into growing fruits and vegetables on Long Island.

The kids visited the Peconic Land Trust’s Agricultural Center at Charnews Farm in Southold, a working farm where the North Fork community can learn gardening techniques hands-on.

As part of the day's activities, the young farmers dug for potatoes, and learned about the nutritional value of the the produce Long Islanders eat.

The students were given a healthy snack of kale chips as a reward for their hard work in the fields.

Such educational programs are part of the Peconic Land Trust’s stewardship and outreach programs, which aim to engage the East End community in land conservation, farming and the value of eating locally grown produce.
