Romaine Honors Shelter Island Senior Kelsey McGayhey

Accomplished Shelter Island student-athlete is honored at the Suffolk County General Legislative meeting on March 13.

As the first female student-athlete on Shelter Island history to eclipse the 1,000 point milestone with a total 1,086 career points in basketball, Kelsey McGayhey was honored by Suffolk County Legis. Ed Romaine at the General Legislative meeting on March 13 for her accomplishments.

McGayhey is a senior attending who will graduate with a Regents diploma in June. She has been a hard worker throughout her high school career, enrolled in challenging courses such as AP U.S. History, Advanced Biology-Molecular Genetics.

Kelsey also spent several weeks abroad last summer in Spain, where she applied her vast knowledge of five years of Spanish. Through diligence, hard work and commitment, Kelsey has been a varsity athlete in both basketball and volleyball during her entire high school career. For the past two years, she has served as captain of both squads and has also led Long Island in scoring average.

She holds a scoring average of 23.3 points, total points of 373 for 16 games. Her season high is 34 points versus Smithtown-Christian on Jan. 17, 2012, and career high is 37 points versus Southold on Feb. 8, 2011.

Kelsey is a special athlete, well-liked by her teammates and coaches, who will continue to be a student-athlete while participating in Volleyball at the collegiate level in the fall, with plans to major in athletic training.
