Review: Mattituck Students Shine at Holiday Concert

Featuring plenty of seasonal songs from 'Sleigh Ride' to jazzy twists on other classics, Mattituck High School's holiday concert proved to be a wonderful musical experience Wednesday night.

Musically inclined students wowed the audience with their skills at the school's lively annual holiday concert on Wednesday.

The high school concert band, jazz ensemble, select chorus, and chorus performed a variety of pieces. The concert band, lead by band director Tim Caskin, kicked off the show with a march entitled "Konigsmarsch,"which was followed by the "Ukrainian Bell Carol," more commonly known as "Carol of the Bells."

The seniors were then featured in a "Baby, It's Cold Outside" duet with the band's accompaniment. The band closed their portion of the program with the multi-movement piece, the "Forest of the King," which featured solos by Kaitlyn Doorhy, Michael Kelly, and Nick Bieber.

Select chorus, lead by choir director Jacob Fowle, performed next, displaying their talent with a number of a cappella pieces including the festive "With Gladness, Cheer, and Song!" Next they sang "There is Sweet Music Here," which is a more reflective piece. "Run to the Manger" combined an original arrangement with the classic "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and included some subtle choreography.

The jazz Ensemble, directed by Mr. Caskin, started with swing tune "One Note at a Time" performed by a quartet consisting of Tom Sledjeski, Christian Tettelbach, Nick Bieber, and Dan Salice and also featured solos by James Finora and Dan Salice on trombone. "Angel Eyes" featured solos by Matt Mauterelli on trombone and Tom Sledjeski on alto saxophone. Senior Michelle Rosnack sang the vocal piece "Just Friends," and the group concluded with a jazzy twist on the classic holiday tune "Sleigh Ride."

Mattituck High School chorus closed the show with a combination of holiday-themed pieces under the direction of Mr. Fowle. They started with "To Shorten Winter's Sadness" a song from the Renaissance period meant to usher in the spring. "Si Vis Amari" is derived from a Latin proverb meaning "If you want to be loved, love."

A variation on "Silent Night" entitled "A Celtic Silent Night" featured accompaniment by Kira Buckel on piano and Lisa Beebe on violin. The spiritual tune "Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning" followed and featured a combination of clapping and choreography to keep things lively.

It is a tradition at Mattituck that "Adoramus Te" closes each holiday concert, and chorus joined the chorus in their final song of this spectacular winter show.
