Porters Win Big Before Playoffs

After a 54-24 win Friday Night against the Stony Brook Bears, the North Fork Porters football team will be competing for the Division IV championship.

The Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/ (5-3), had seven players involved in scoring to ultimately defeat Stony Brook School's Bears 54-24 Friday night at Stony Brook. The Porters will now head to their second Division IV playoff series in a row.

Heroes: With two rushing touchdowns each, Thomasz Filipkowski, Ryan Malone, and Tyler McNeil lead the offense down the field, with little challenge from the Bears' defense.  Taylor Lindsay scored on a touchdown pass from Mike Mangiamele.  Special teams and defense got on the board with a safety from Dan Canales and a 28 yard field goal from Tremayne Hansen.

Turning Point: Once the Porters took over the ball it was clear they weren't going to be stopped easily. Their first drive lasted three plays before the score. But, that wasn't as impressive as the manner in which they progressed. The Porters pushed the ball up the middle and broke down the defense with strength and agility. Much of the Stony Brook defense found themselves on the ground empty-handed after attempting tackles. It was a fairly steady course of success for the Porters, with the Bears finally turning on the offense in their final drives.

Quote: "After getting knocked out in the first round last season, we're looking forward the playoffs.  We'll definitely be trying to get a ring," McNeil said after the game.

Bottom Line:  The Porters were dominant in this game, but that sense of superiority is not going to translate well into the postseason.  Their wins this year have all come from teams below them in the standings.  It's likely that all of those teams end up with more losses than wins.  Instead the Porters will be up against the teams that given them their trouble and racked up their losses column.  It won't be an easy time for the Porter's, but games like these show they have the ability to prove fit for the upper ranks of Division IV football.
