NJROTC Wins First Place at SUNY Maritime Competition, 9th Year in Row

The Southold/Mattituck/Greenport NJROTC unit made the North Fork proud this weekend.

The North Fork swelled with pride this weekend at the Southold-Mattituck-Greenport Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Crops won first place at a SUNY Maritime College drill competition — for the ninth year in a row.

"These kids truly amaze me," said Joan Dinizio.

On the Greenport Union Free School District Facebook page, residents lauded the NJROTC.

"Makes us former NJROTC cadets proud! Hand salute!" wrote Jason Vanetten.

The unit, now over 300 members strong, showed strong spirit during the competition; according to Donna Dunne, it was the first time that the SMG NJROTC drill competition was let by a former member. In addition, two members of the Southold Class of 2010, and one member of the Mattituck Class of 2010,  former members of the unit, who are on full scholarships, are battalion leaders of their NROTC unit in college.

"It just goes to show the great things these cadets go on to accomplish," she said. "Even though they are from different schools, they are one unit."
