Local Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Named 'Most Outstanding Unit'
For the fifth year in a row, Southold-Mattituck-Greenport Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps is tops in the Northeast.
The cadets of have been named the Area 4 Most Outstanding Unit for the fifth year in a row, according to Major William Grigonis, leader of the corps.
According to Major Grigonis, Area 4 comprises the Northeast region of the United States, from Maine to Delaware, and includes 52 NJROTC units.
“Most units and their instructors dream of receiving this distinction once in their career,” said Major Grigonis. “To receive this honor for five years running is a testament to the drive, determination and devotion that the cadets, parents and families, as well as all of the supporters in the North Fork Community, have in this program.”

There are currently 263 cadets participating in the corps and Major Grigonis said it takes the hard work of every one to achieve this honor. This has been a banner year for the NJROTC, he noted, with five cadets earning academy appointments, as well as Cadet Battalion Executive Officer Kim Krupski and Cadet Commander Billy Goggins taking first and second place, respectively, in the Cadet of the Year Competition, which encompasses all Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps JROTC Units in New York State.
“For these kids, it has been a dream year and this is the icing on the cake,” said Major Grigonis. “They worked so hard for this. I am in awe of these kids.”
