It's Time for Back to School Shopping

It's the most wonderful time of the year but most parents do not have an easy button to use for buying school supplies.

As the summer nights start to get shorter, it can only mean one thing for local children.

It’s time to prepare to go back to school. And for parents, that means checking the supply list and your wallet.

Within a few short weeks backpacks need to readied, supplies to need to be purchased, clothing needs to be updated, and bed-times need to be adjusted. School supply lists may have been sent home at the end of June or over the summer and it’s time to fill the supply lists while the stores are still offering sales.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s on sale this weekend.

CVS in Mattituck and Riverhead have sales that run through Saturday. It is buy one, get one 50 percent off (with CVS card) on Elmer’s Glue products, Expo markers, Paper Mate and all Crayola products.

At Target, a Lexar 8GB USB Drive is on sale for $9. Poly folders are .50 and Five Star one-subject notebooks are $1. Sharpie permanent marker two-packs and highlighter three-packs are $1.

Eastport backpacks start at $8 at Walmart. Paper Mate mechanical pencils (24-count) will cost around $6 and a four-pack of Durable brand binders are $18.

Kmart has a wide variety of crayons, glue, markers, pencils, pens, rulers and folders from .25 to $1. The store also has one-, three- and five-subject notebooks available from $2 to $6.

The Southold Emporium Variety Store has a well-stocked school supply section. Owner Peg Killian has Southold Elementary and Southold High School supply lists and she said she has nearly everything in stock. The store is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Killian said her merchandise was “reasonably priced.” Call the store at 631-876-5151 to see if she has what you need.

Try not to put off shopping because the sales may dry up and the elusive erasable pens may be difficult to find. Here is a list of opening days of North Fork schools to help with your planning.
