Featured Event: Southold High School Presents the Film 'Race to Nowhere'

Think our education system is broken? See this documentary at Southold High School at 6:30 Thursday night.

The Southold Parent-Teacher Association presents the noted documentary “Race to Nowhere,” a recent film by ex-Wall Street lawyer Vicki Abeles and mother of three, about young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink by relentless pressures to perform on tests instead of learn deeply about themselves and the world around them.

The film, which has become a grassroots sensation at showings in community venues across the country, starts at 6:30 p.m. at theauditorium.

Through interviews with high school students and educators, the documentary unveils a secondary education experience riddled with cheating, stress-related illness, and depression and burnout in both students and teachers.

“A friend of mine had sent me the trailer to the film on Facebook,” said Jennifer Conway, head of Southold PTA. “I feel very strongly against the standardized testing in our schools and thought it would be great to bring the film to the community.”

Mattituck-based psychologist Alison Byers will host a Q&A session after the showing.
