Long Island Small Farms Summit

Successful Long Island organic farmers and gardeners will have answers to all your questions at a variety of workshops at SUNY Old Westbury. 

Novice gardeners will learn tips from the pros on creating a clean, delicious, ecologically sound garden.  Workshop leaders Eve and Chris Kaplan-Walbrecht of Garden of Eve Organic Farm & Market will teach you how to save money and avoid chemicals by growing your own vegetables from seed. Learn what and how to plant, how to prepare your soil, what supplies you need, and money-saving tips.  

The LI-NYC Chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) will speak on, “Raising Poultry: Backyard Chickens & Ducks.”    Learn how you can raise chickens and ducks in your backyard. This workshop teaches benefits of raising poultry for eggs, where to buy chicks and ducklings, and how to properly to care for them.  

  “Accessing the Local Food System: Food Co-ops, Restaurants, and Community Supported Food Programs” is a workshop by Slow Food Huntington and the LI-NYC Chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York.   In this workshop, learn how to purchase vegetables and fish directly from farmers and fisherman.  

Dr. Ellen Kamhi will guide you on a walking adventure in discovering the 'roots' of medicine, along with the leaves, stems, fruits and seeds that have always been the mainstay of the human diet in all parts of the world.
