Back to School: Greenport Gets New Roof, New Teachers

With lots of new construction completed, Greenport school is ready for some kids on Wednesday.

But they’ll have to wait for a refurbished auditorium, new boilers, windows, solar panels and a windmill.

“But all projects are right on schedule,” said Superintendent Michael Comanda.

Comanda said he expected the boiler project to be complete by Sept. 15 and work on new windows to get started in about six weeks. The auditorium has been getting a facelift for the past few weeks as of now and all the seats are currently out of the building getting refurbished. Comanda said the Nov. 10 is the target date for finishing the auditorium. The wind and solar project will go out to bid in mid-September.

Aside from construction, funded by awhich was overwhelmingly approved last December, Comanda said that everything else voted on in the this past May is “intact,” and that positions that needed to be filled have been filled, such as a second-grade teacher and a full-time Spanish teacher.

“Now we just need some kids in here,” Comanda said.
