What Do You Think About Bike/Race Events on Town Roads?

Do you agree with Southold town's new policy to allow only charitable events on area roads?

With a community meeting scheduled to discuss Southold's new road use policy, Patch wants to hear what you think.

According to Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell, due to the "unprecedented" number of requests to utilize town roads and facilities for the purpose of promotional fundraising events, including biking and running events, the Southold Town Board recently adopted a road use policy to impose limitations to promote public safety and the well-being for town residents.

The policy attempts to limit the scope and size for using town roads for promotional events, Russell said. In addition, it imposes restrictions on for-profit events and out-of-town sponsoring organizations.

"There appears to be some confusion about how the enacted policy will impact local organizations; therefore, a meeting has been set to clarify the intent of the policy as well as allow residents the ability to ask questions and/or express concerns," Russell said. "I hope that the public will read the policy as presented on the town’s website and be prepared to ask the town board questions about the policy” Russell said.

The meeting will be held on June 4 at approximately 8 p.m., immediately after the scheduled town board meeting, in the Town Hall meeting room.

What do you think about the new policy? Do you feel it's a good idea -- and will help ease traffic, congestion, and safety concerns? Or do you think it's unfair to the many groups who've organized successful events in the area in the past? Let us know in the comments section.
