One-Year, Three-Year Terms Contested at Mattituck Park District

Voting happens Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Veterans Beach Park.

Nick Deegan, who lost his bid for a seat in the New York State Assembly to Dan Losquadro earlier this month, is running for a one-year term as Mattituck Park District Commissioner. Voting happens Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Veterans Beach Park.

Deegan said that he had been removed from the board when he failed to take the oath of office in time when he decided to run for the assembly in early September and is running to get his seat back. Mattituck resident Mike Ryan, who is running as a write-in candidate, is running against Deegan, who has been a park district commissioner since 2007.

Mattituck residents George Lomaga, a college professor and former school board member, and Russ Williamson are also running for a seat to be left vacant by Charles Zaloom, who is not running again for park district commissioner for a three-year term.

Incumbant treasurer Shelley Maddaloni is running unopposed for a two-year term. Incumbent Jerry Goehringer has two years left to serve of his term after his re-election last year.

Since 1941, the Mattituck Park District has maintained and enhanced nine properties in Mattituck — beaches, athletic fields, a boat ramp and nature preserves — a total of 73 acres. The properties are private to residents of the park district, which includes parts of Laurel.

The office is located at Veterans Beach Memorial Park, 11280 Peconic Bay Boulevard, Mattituck. Call 631-298-9103 or go to www. mattituckparkdistrict.com

Deegan and Lomaga - Nick is a very principled man and he vouches for Lomarga. If I lived there, they would have my vote.

Correction: Mike Ryan and Nick Deegan are running for the one-year term; Russ Williamson and George Lomaga are running for the three-year term. The text has been updated. Erin

So let me get this straight. Deegan, who ran for office and won the last time, and then failed to take the oath of office because "he didn't know about it," notwithstanding the fact that he had previously been elected to the park district and taken the oath of office, is now running again for the park district. Will he take the oath of office this time? Is he somehow opposed to taking an oath of office to serve the people who elect him? Absolutely bizarre, but wait, didn't Steve Brautigam to the exact same thing? Run, get elected as treasurer of the park district, and then abandon his position and not take the oath of office? What is it with these people? Maybe Deegan is better off staying in his Off Track Betting job and leaving the park district alone.

Huh? "Nick is a very principled man" ??? Nick is a career politician - always campaigning for the democratic party. If you're a democratic you can do anything you want but if you're not a democrat, he'll stonewall you. Take a look at all his signs around Mattituck. Is that the act of an even tempered guy? Or is that the act of a guy who wants to get back in to make more contacts for his next political run?
Wake up folks.

Its better if you speak with him before lunch....
Cliff Batuello November 19, 2012 at 10:41 pm
Just who is "not a farmer" that he would say such a nasty thing? Are you referring to Nick being Irish? Being a drunk? Is there something you know that NO one else does? And why is it if you feel so strongly about the subject you don't have the balls to print your name? Pathetic, really.

Wow, you really have an opinion on everything and everyone. You obviously have ample time on your hands given the regular posts by you all hours of the day. I guess you are, indeed, not a farmer. I do not suppose you are much of anything else, either. Why don't you volunteer and do something positive with your time?

even worse?...When I had the publisher of North Fork Magazine contact me regarding the blatantRead More violation, what were his comments?? To add further insult to injury, he said & I quote: "I thought I was doing Greenport a favor...all of the businesses there are suffering...this paper doesn't make any money...sure I have advertisers but they don't pay their invoices...maybe if the cover of the magazine brings business to Greenport, maybe those merchants will pay their bill.."

Better yet, rather than pay mag's invoice. send $$$ to Artist.
Scotty June 16, 2013 at 08:41 pm
And he really still doesn't see that he's stealing from the artist to 'bring business to Greenport'?Read More The effrontery of his comment leaves me aghast. Of ALL people who should grasp the concept of plagiarism and copyright laws, it should be a newspaper editor/publisher! Cropping out her signature proves they knew full well that they were stealing her work. I'd suggest the artist contact a copyright attorney pronto. I'm always astonished when something like this occurs when a simple phone call to the artist might have been successful in allowing him to use her work WITH her signature intact instead of doing something so underhanded.

I've just tried to do a Google search for you and from what I've found you need to either check withRead More your local library to see if they have one they might lend you--OR--try Audio/Visual online companies. There are some which DO rent projectors for days or weekends. I have one but just checked with my husband and at the very least it needs a replacement bulb(which are fairly expensive)--hasn't been looked at in years so there's no way I could guarantee it would work. You've definitely given me an idea, though--I'll get mine in shape at some point and rent it to folks for a nominal sum. I'm sure there are many others who have old film they'd enjoy viewing for family reunions as would my own family. Good luck. If you don't succeed for next weekend, you have other options. At the very least you might be able to have the film transposed to a DVD and distributed to your family members although that's costly too, depending on how many copies you need. Just a thought, but you could add the old footage in with some taken AT the reunion as a nice follow-up gift for the attendees?

I believe this photo is a poor example of pollution on Long Island. I would prefer to see and photoRead More of a million dollar home with a lush green lawn mowed to a bulkhead above the waters edge. I believe the excess fertilizers used to keep the invasive specie of the lawn grasses green along with the broad-leaf pesticides to keep the "weeds" controlled are a prime source of pollution to our local bays, estuaries and ocean front.
