Oct. 5: Time for a Civic Frame of Mind

Town focuses on deer fencing, local housing and noise ordinance issues today.

If you have the time, Southold Town Board Tuesday is a chance to hear what your local elected officials are doing to make life on the North Fork better, hopefully, and an opportunity for them to hear what you have to say. Here's what's happening at Town Hall today.

1. Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell and Town Board members meet today starting at 9 a.m. to hash out issues such as deer herd damage control and how to improve the health of Goldsmith Inlet in Peconic, the waters of which have become choked by stormwater runoff and by  the lack of flow from the Long Island Sound.

2. The day after the launch of the Town's volunteer deer hunting program, which is meant to help thin an ever-growing and largely unhealthy local herd, the Town Board is holding a public hearing after their regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. on allowing commercial and residential property owners to set up deer fencing. Only owners of agricultural land are currently permitted to have deer fencing to help protect crops.

3. You'll also get a chance tonight to voice your opinion on how to expand local housing options. Finding an affordable place to live has been a challenge for years for many working people in town.

4. Bring the noise tonight on whether or not Southold should have a local noise ordinance. The Town is the only one on Long Island without one.

5. Southold Town Board members will also hear feedback on a proposed law that would limit parking along Mill Road leading up to Goldsmith Inlet. The law would eliminate parking between Second and Miami Avenues, both residential roads, and would require drivers to have town permits to park north of Second Avenue.
