Southold Town Closes Beaches

Despite sunny skies and high temperatures, Southold Town officials closed beaches to swimmers on Friday.

The sun may be shining outside, but Southold Town has closed its beaches to swimmers in anticipation of Hurricane Irene.

Southold Town Recreation Director Ken Reeves said the town met yesterday and decided in the interest of safety to close the beaches early. The parking areas at the beaches and recreation areas will remain open but swimmers will not be allowed to swim in unprotected areas until further notice.

Reeves said the beaches will remain closed through Sunday, Aug. 28.

"On Monday, we will look at the damage to the beaches and make a determination on opening the beaches for the remainder of the summer," Reeves said.
