Southold Supervisor: 'Conditions Are Still Dangerous'

Southold Emergency Operations has completed a town wide evaluation of post Hurricane Sandy, and Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell recommends satying off the roads due to dangerous conditions from debris and down wires.

According to the supervisor, the town's state of emergency will be canceled as of 6 p.m. Tuesday. The emergency shelters at local schools and the human resource center in Mattituck ceased operations effective at noon on Tuesday

"The EMO wants to remind the community that there is a considerable amount of debris and conditions are still dangerous," Russell said in a statement. "The Southold Town Highway Department, working under the direction of Superintendent Peter Harris, has started its debris removal process. His department continues to work with other agencies to open the roads of Southold Town."

With emergency services of Southold Town are still responding to numerous calls as a result of this storm, and Russell asks that residents limit the use of all roads so crews assigned can get the critical work done.

"Once debris management is completed, we will be coordinating with LIPA to ensure that electric is restored as quickly as possible," Russell said. "Representatives of LIPA are in contact with Southold Town and we will provide time tables for restoration of electric service to the public as we receive that information from representatives of LIPA."  

Southold Town is in regular contact with the Suffolk County Department of Emergency Preparedness. A coastal flood advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday. A wind advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening.
