Research Panel Reviews Plum Island Future, Housing Options

The National Research Council makes suggestions for Plum Island and its aging animal disease research center.

According to reports from Newsday and the Suffolk Times, the National Research Council made recommendations regarding the future of Plum Island this week to the Department of Homeland Security, the governing body that oversees operations at the Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center.

The group did not favor maintaining the research center and suggested that plans for a new facility in Kansas, an idea that was first proposed in 2008, should be scaled back — if and when for the move. Newsday focused on the idea of high-density development — up to 750 homes — suggested as a future option in the Plum Island report.
