POLL: Where Does Shelter Island Belong in the State Assembly?

East End elected officials are now pushing for a South Fork-Shelter Island-Brookhaven district — what do you think?

In a turn of events, South Fork Assemblyman Fred Thiele announced that he will join North Fork Assemblyman Dan Losquadro and both Riverhead and Southold town boards in seeking modifications to a redistricting proposal that would unite the Twin Forks in the New York State Assembly.

All wish to establish a Brookhaven-North Fork district, including northeast Brookhaven, Riverhead and Southold, and a South Fork-Shelter Island-Brookhaven district that includes Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island and southeast Brookhaven.

But, this move would remove Shelter Island from the North Fork in its assembly representation and connect it with the Hamptons.

What do you think? Shelter Island is, indeed, its own little island with its own issues — but is it closer to the North Fork or the South Fork in the realm of state representation? Do you think Shelter Island would benefit the most if the entire East End were to unite in the assembly?

Take our poll below and let us know your thoughts.
