POLL: Should the North Fork Join the Hamptons for New Assembly District?

Fred Thiele announced on Thursday that Southold and Shelter Island would join his South Fork district under a new proposal — what do you think?

The South Fork will share its state assemblyman with Southold and Shelter Island towns starting in 2012 if a redistricting plan unveiled Thursday based on the 2010 Census is adopted,

The office of , I-Sag Harbor, said in a statement Thursday afternoon that he has learned that under the plan his district would have new boundaries and become the new First Assembly District. He will continue to represent East Hampton and Southampton towns. But with the addition of Southold and Shelter Island towns, Thiele will lose a portion of southeast Brookhaven Town.

Take our poll below and let know what you think.

Fred Thiele has been advocating improved rail and bus service for the entire East End. I along with representatives of the East End Democratic Town Leaders and the Five Towns Rural Transportaton Committee met last week with Assemblyman Thiele to advocate increased funding for the proposals drawn up by that Committee. Fred will introduce a capitalization bill in the Assembly for necessary funding. Fred Thiele gets it on this issue and I believe he will well represent us. Art Tillman

Wonderful. Bishop in Congress. Thiel in the Assembly. Now the Town of Southold will be completely forgotten on both the state and federal levels. We'll get nothing from either the feds, or the state. South fork interests, and money, will eclipse our electorate, and our interests. This is a bad idea for Southold.

"a capitalization bill" -- Is that a codeword for "bond it out and assume more municipal debt on the backs of the taxpayers?" Generally speaking, and I do mean generally, the only people on either the north or south forks who need public transportation to "commute" on the east end, do not own homes. As a very real and direct consequence of not owning homes on the east end, they do not pay any property taxes. Therefore, the ultimate effect of any bond or other public payment to support or improve rail or bus services on the east end will be increased taxes on property owners, to provide a service for those who do not own property. In short, tax the rich to give benefits to the poor. Sorry. You want a bus or rail operation providing better services to citizens, let private industry do it. Don't tax me, more, to give someone less fortunate a more convenient way of getting to work. We already subsidize the MTA to the tune of millions of dollars. I am not interested in a PBTA.

A wonderful idea if you are Fred Thiele. I wonder what side of the issue he was on when the North Fork wanted a cross sound operation out of Easthampton? Why do we want to dilute what small influence we do have with a carpetbagging politician from the Southside? Bishop ran Southampton College into the ground and then was promoted to Congress. Just take a look at where Bishop's pork barrel projects all go, do you really think Thiele will be any different for us at the AD level? We got good service out of our past AD legislator and our new one is doing well by us.

CARTOON REPS ARE FOR CARTOON PEOPLE - WHILE I THINK RE-DISTRICTING IS BEST SERVED IN SMALLER AREAS WHICH ALLOWS FOR BETTER REP.'S IT INCREASES THE COST ARE WE WILLING TO PAY MORE FOR BETTER REP.'S. THIELE IS ANYTHING BUT A CARTOON. HE REP'S. HIS DISTRICT WELL. BECAUSE SOME THINK IT IS RICHER THAN THE NO. FO. HE WILL REP. ONLY IT. NOT SO HE AS ANY NEW ELECTED WOULD HAVE TO TUNE IN - HE DID SO MANY YEARS AGO WHEN HE WAS A VERY YOUNG ELECTED REP.
