Photo of the Day: Village Businesses Cited For Snow On Sidewalks

Some business owners had to face the judge in Southold Friday after being told they did not shovel sidewalks soon enough after the recent blizzard.

Last month's cold blast of winter had some residents' hot under the collar Friday, as approximately 30 Greenport village residents appeared in Southold Town court to pay fines summonses they were issued for not shoveling their sidewalks soon enough after the February blizzard.

Nearly 30 business owners were cited, with the average fine around $50.

One Patch reader, who asked not to be identified, questioned why business owners would be answering summonses for not clearing snow immediately after a blizzard "that had the whole island paralyzed."

She added, "It sounds like a crappy and clueless way to treat people when the county couldn't even get cars off the road for three days, or plow. It just isn't right."

Greenport Village Mayor David Nyce did not immediately return a request for comment.
