Outside Spending in Bishop-Altschuler Race Tops $3 Million

Super PACs, state and national committees blitz district to sway favor.

While Rep. Tim Bishop and Republican challenger Randy Altschuler have spent about a combined $3 million in the race for New York's First Congressional District, groups from outside the district have spent even more to sway the outcome of the race, according to a recent Newsday report.

Newsday's 'Spin Cycle' blog reported on Monday that Altschuler has been the beneficiary of about two-thirds of the outside spending, which includes super PACs, congressional campaign committees and other groups.

The influx of dollars has resulted in largely negative advertising coming from both sides, on TV and in campaign flyers.
