One More Week Until Town Offers Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

Southold Town Clerk Elizabeth Neville says same-sex marriage licenses will be ready at the start of business at Town Hall next Monday.

Same-sex couples living on the North Fork have only a few days to wait until they can legally get a marriage license from Clerk Elizabeth Neville.

Though the becomes a New York State law this coming Sunday, Southold Town Hall will not be open until the next day, as usual. Same-sex couples can acquire their marriage licenses this coming Monday morning.

“It’s technically the same license [as it is for a heterosexual couple],” Neville said. “It’s just a gender-neutral license, but the same procedures apply.”

Neville said that in order to get the marriage license, both parties have to show up in person to the Town Clerk’s office — this is not something that can be done over the phone, online or by mail. Each person needs to bring a birth certificate and a photo ID such as a driver’s license, passport of naturalization certificate. Also, if either person has been married and divorced previously, they need to bring a copy of their divorce decree.

The fee for the license is $40 and the process takes about 20 minutes, Neville said. The license can be used 24 hours after it is issued and up to 60 days thereafter.

“I recommend that people come in before 3 p.m. so we can make sure we can get it done for them,” Neville said.
