Conservative, Independence Primaries for Town Justice on Tuesday

Southold voters registered with the Independence and Conservative Parties can hit the polls on Tuesday in primaries to determine who will represent them in the Town Justice race come Nov. 8.

Justice Rudolph Bruer, a Republican, will be facing off against Democratic challenger Brian Hughes for the nominations. Bruer was first elected in 1996, and has run unopposed in the last two elections.

Roughly 1,100 voters in Southold identify themselves with the Conservative and Independence parties.

Bruer graduated from Brooklyn Law School and served in the United State National Guard from 1964 to 1970, said Republican Chairman Denis Noncarrow.

"Everybody knows him to be a very fair, very thoughtful guy," Noncarrow said. "He's well-respected in town and has been an attorney in Southold for over 40 years."

Bruer is the candidate of choice for the Conservative and Independence Parties.

Hughes graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and St. John's University Law School. He has been practicing law in Southold since 1997 and was appointed to the town Board of Ethics in 2010 and
