Civic Group Gets the Scoop From Political Candidates

They want answers.

One group of residents have put their questions to the candidates running for both town board and town trustee seats in the coming Southold Town election.

Southold Voice, a not-for-profit organization of waterfront property owners and others interested in the use, enjoyment and preservation of Southold Township’s extensive waterfront from Laurel to Orient Point, has created a list of questions for candidates.

The questions range from waterfront issues, property rights, post-Sandy concerns, and goals, should candidates be elected.

The organization aims to promote awareness of issues affecting shoreline and marine resources to further cooperation between responsible use, regulatory protection, and the rights of riparian owners for the benefit of the community, according to the Southold Voice website.

John Betsch, chairman of Southold Voice, said the group sent a letter out to all candidates and spoke with party chairmen to get names and addresses of each person running for office.

Next, they sent out certified letters, with a return receipt, to ensure each candidate received the questions.

Candidates were told the answers would be posted online in their entirety on a first-come, first served basis.

“Southold Voice was the first to ask the candidates online questions," Betsch said, adding that the initiative was successful and continued for the current election season. "We hope it gives information to everyone, so that everyone can make a proper choice in their selection."
