Campaign Notebook: Bishop-Altschuler Debates Kick Off

Meanwhile, committees and super PACs flood the region with ads.

As election season kicks into high gear, Patch will be rounding up news from your local elections running up to Election Day. Here's what happened this week:

Congressional Debates Kick Off

Just over six weeks before Election Day, Congressional candidates Tim Bishop and Randy Altschuler started making the debating rounds, doing three debates in total from Sunday through Thursday. The two faced off Sunday (click here to see video of the first debate) and Thursday in Riverhead, with an appearance in Hampton Bays on Monday sandwiched between the two.

In Hampton Bays, a high school senior bluntly asked the two candidates, "Why are both of you running negative ads and sending negative flyers instead of concentrating on your own achievements and accomplishments?”

Committees, Super PACs Send Messages

While the two candidates for Congress battle it out mano a mano, like-minded political committees and super PACs are coming to send messages backing their candidate up - or taking their opponent down. The New York Democratic and Republican Committees have sent out handfuls of flyers over the past two weeks, one calling the other candidate "corrupt" while the other labels its opponent an "outsourcer."

Meanwhile Prosperity First, Inc., a conservative super PAC, PhotoShopped the former House Majority Nancy Pelosi to look as though she's playing chess in one flyer. And left-leaning House Majority PAC ran a TV ad highlighting Altschuler's former company OfficeTiger.

We asked readers what they thought of the flyers arriving in their mailboxes nearly every day. Join the conversation here.

Speaking of Super PACs...

The nation's highest donor to super PACs supporting Democratic candidates is Long Island's richest resident, East Setauket's James Simons. The founder of hedge fund firm Renaissance Technologies and former mathematics professor at SBU has donated $4 million to four different groups, most recently an Aug. 8 donation of $2 million to Priorities USA.

What Would You Ask LaValle, Fleming?

Southampton Patch editor Brendan O'Reilly has been asked to be one of a few moderators during an Oct. 15 debate between incumbent state Sen. Ken LaValle, R-Port Jefferson, and Democrat Bridget Fleming, Southampton.

The debate, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons and the Hampton Bays Civic Association, will take place at the Hampton Bays Senior Center, starting at 7 p.m.

We're curious what's on our readers' minds, so if you have a question you would like answered, ask it in the comments section of this article.

Thank you Congressman Bishop for hanging in there amid the smear campaign of Randy and his smear staff. It seems that Altschuler doesn't believe in our system of justice and prefers, instead, to try the innocent as though they were guilty. And Randy want to be OUR representative in the House? No thanks. Not only has Altschuler backed (without speaking out AGAINST) the Republican vote AGAINST the veterans job bill last week, but he also supports (by NOT speaking out AGAINST) the billion dollar cuts to VA benefits in the Romney-Ryan budget. Tim Bishop has ALWAYS supported our men and women in the armed forces. When he sent them to war, he made sure they got the benefits they were due. Thank you Congressman Bishop for supporting our veterans!

Good Campaign Randy - We are all glad to see this career politician exposed for what he is - a fraud and somebody who has violated the Public Trust. Tim Bishop bankrupted our College, employed 23 family members there, had 2 daughters college paid for by his RICH pal and vot-buying donor, and killed the Piping Plovers for a campaign bribe. A career politician who is now a multi-millionaire, and who has served 5 terms, destroyed the jobs here on Long Island and has no solutions to the problems he's created for us locally. Time for Tim to go sail off into the sunset and put somebody young and hungry who wants to help - and needs no bribes or political payback like Bishop who is beholden to Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and Obama. Nice job destroying Long Island Mr. Bishop.

I listened to the debate on Peconic Public Broadcasting and was incensed at Tim Bishop's outright lie when he stated that we are not paying for illegal immigrant healthcare. Just google the subject and you will find that the federal government pays hospitals to cover the uninsured, including illegal immigrants. Where do you think the federal government gets the money to cover this? DUH-taxpayers, that's where. How dare he say such things.
Boo September 30, 2012 at 04:09 PM
From the American College of Emergency Room Physicians website: Q. How much does it cost U.S. taxpayers to provide health care for illegal immigrants? A. Billions of dollars are estimated to be spent each year, although data are scarce on both the costs and use of health care. Transient living conditions, undercounting of migrant workers and desire to avoid contact with government agencies limit the nation's ability to accurately determine the costs of their medical care. In some hospitals, as much as two-thirds of total operating costs are for uncompensated care for illegal aliens. As a result, hundreds of emergency departments have closed. In Los Angeles, for example, 10 hospitals have closed in the past five years because of uncompensated care. Congress in 2005 authorized $1 billion in funding over four years to help physicians and hospitals recover costs of providing emergency care to illegal immigrants. This was a critical first step in recognizing the growing funding crisis in the nation's emergency departments, which affects everyone's access to emergency care.

Also, the affordable care act will cut the funding to hospitals for illegal immigrant care. The act completely sidesteps the entire issue. So the latinos who support Obama will effectively be cutting their own throats by re-electing him. Ironic, isn't it???
Ralebird October 01, 2012 at 03:48 AM
And yet Mitt Romney sees the emergency room as the place for those without health insurance to get their care. Astounding.
Jaguar-Guy October 01, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Ralebird - So did EVERY SINGLE person on the planet until Obama thought he'd more quickly spread more wealth to over 40 Million people - 30 Million of whom were not seeking it out anyway. The rest is for the benefit of those "out of status" - to quote Mo Neill - and that number will explode once Immigration Amnesty occurs, and then we will be totally bankrupt.

Boo, I thought you wingnuts wanted the gov't to stop caring for the undocumented? Now you complain when the funding is cut?

Bottom line - well said Jaquar Guy.
Drtee-Dancer October 01, 2012 at 05:02 PM
Hire somebody to do a job & correct a problem (Simpson & Bowles) & you personally don't like their ideas or suggestions because of no open checkbook - a personal disgrace by our President.
Drtee-Dancer October 01, 2012 at 05:11 PM
Must say his supporters on Meadow Lane are good people.
Mary Beth October 01, 2012 at 05:29 PM
Hey, drtee-dancer, Paul Ryan was actually on the commission and he voted AGAINST Simpson Bowles.

Randy Altschuler's business partner at OfficeTiger, Joseph Sigelman, said "we hope to be leading the move of white-collar jobs from the US." [LA Times, 8/29/04]
Bob Bittner October 01, 2012 at 06:50 PM
@ Mary Beth... the difference here is Ryan offered along with Democrat Alice Rivlin alternatives to the parts of Simpson Bowles Plan on Medicare he could not support. The President "did nothing" with his commissions report!
Jaguar-Guy October 01, 2012 at 07:27 PM
Thank you Bob B. MB pulls the pin on a grenade and throws it in the room and calmly walks away - and NEVER has the guts to reply. Yes, we all know it was the PRESIDENT's ridiculously HUGE ego that stopped a grand-bargain. Boehner and the Dems had a deal and Obama screwed it totally up - as reported by Bob Woodward too.
Jaguar-Guy October 01, 2012 at 07:31 PM
Tim Bishop outsourced Billions of our Tax Dollars on creating jobs and wealth in Canada, Mexico, Finland and everywhere else OTHER than Long Island. He bankrupted our College, hired 23 family members to be on the payroll (nice for them), is guilty of taking BRIBES and is atop the list of most corrupt congressmen. He is a crook, who has NO problem reaching into our pockets - to fill his. How does a civil servant become a multi-millionaire?? http://investigatebishop.com/
