As Temps Heat Up, Town Opens Cooling Centers

The town's libraries will serve as cooling centers this week.

As a heat wave slammed the North Fork with soaring temperatures and soaking humidity, Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell urged all residents Monday to take necessary precautions in light of the "oppressive heat" that has gripped the area.

Southold Town has partnered with local libraries to provide cooling centers so those without air conditioning can beat the heat. In addition, beginning on Tuesday, the town's Human Resource Center, located at 750 Pacific Street, will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for anyone looking for respite from the high heat and humidity.

Local libraries will be offering their facilities as noted, on weekdays:

Mattituck Laurel Free Library: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library:  9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.
