Weekend Spotlight: Southold Fire Department Turns 125

A parade, food and drink and a Saturday evening dance marks the Southold Fire Department's 125th anniversary.

North Fork residents have all day to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Southold Fire Department on Saturday.

The firehouse will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with all sorts of antique fire-fighting equipment on display. A parade kicks off at 3 p.m. on Route 25 near the intersection of Jockey Creek Drive featuring pipe bands and other bands from local departments.

Hot dogs, hamburgers, beer and wine will be available at the firehouse before a street dance, featuring the music of That '70s Band and a DJ, kicks off under a tent on firehouse grounds at 6 p.m.

Organized in 1886, the Southold Fire Department has 189 volunteers at the ready 365 days a year to serve the hamlets of Southold and Peconic. The brigade responds to about 600 calls a year, most of which are medical-related. The department has three class A pumper trucks, two ambulances, two dive rescue boats, a heavy rescue truck, a tanker, a hose truck, an aerial ladder truck and other support vehicles stored in two firehouses in Southold.
