Two Water Rescues In Southold Over Holiday Weekend

Four boaters were rescued in two separate marine incidents over the holiday weekend in Southold. Two had to rely on a Cross Sound Ferry vessel for the ride home.

Four boaters were rescued in two separate incidents that took place in Southold waters over the long holiday weekend.

On Sunday at 2:55 p.m., two boaters from Meriden, CT, were at Long Beach Point on Gardiners Bay when their vessel began taking on water, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the pair boarded their dinghy until Southold bay constables took the two aboard their vessel. Sea Tow rescuers worked to keep the sinking boat afloat.

The rescued mariners were brought ashore and escorted to Cross Sound Ferry to return home.

Meanwhile, on Saturday at 7:57 p.m., two Southampton teens were found on a jet ski in the Peconic Bay area, between Robins Island and New Suffolk.

Police said Southold Town police marine units responded to a report of a jet ski in distress; the teens were found on the beach in New Suffolk. According to police, the jet ski had engine trouble.

Calls had come in regarding the teens, who were late returning home to Southampton, police said. Although they had been left stranded in the bay, no one was injured, police said.
